After the tragic Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, and the subsequent cargo ship delay that nearly caused an economic disaster in the United States as a result, we started to wonder which ports of call for container ships are the most important for global trade. Is the port of Baltimore in the top 30? Luckily, no. According to a new analysis by SI Yachts, among the top 30 ports in the world, the only ones that are in the United States are The Port of Los Angeles, The Port of New York and New Jersey, and The Port of Savannah, Georgia. While Baltimore doesn’t reach the top 30 in the world, it’s still an important container port in the United States. The Port of Baltimore welcomes 39.6 million metric tons per year which make up a value of over $58 billion. Knowing that there are at least 30 ports in the world that handle more cargo than this is mind boggling! Read on below to see all of the 30 busiest container ports in the world.

Ports are immensely important to the economies of nearly every country on the planet, including landlocked ones! Without ports, goods from around the world would be nearly impossible to transport from continent-to-continent at the rate we currently do. Imagine pumpkins that are grown in the United States. If there was a thriving market for pumpkins in a landlocked country such as Switzerland, cargo ships could help bring those to a major port in Europe, where they would be transported by truck to their final destination. We certainly wouldn’t be sending all those pumpkins by plane!
