Predicting The Most In-Demand Industries Over the Next Decade

By the beginning of 2021, over 3 million people permanently lost their jobs. Fortunately, federal data suggests that the job market may be rallying and continues to be historically strong. The number of job openings and voluntary quits by employees are now above pre-pandemic levels. The national layoff rate is also nearly at a record low despite job cuts by major technology employers. However, the way we work and the jobs that will be in demand have been and will inevitably continue to change. While it is impossible to predict the future (especially with the wild card of artificial intelligence in play), the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ projections are a good place to start. Distance learning company U.S. Career Institute compiled and visualized government data to determine the fastest-growing and fastest-declining industries in the United States spanning from 2021 to 2031:

Do any of the fastest-growing or fastest-declining industries surprise you? I am impressed (and excited) that the performing arts industry (including actors, producers and directors, dancers, and choreographers), is expected to grow by 34.6% in the next decade! Why might this be the case? A quick Google search found that factors such as a blossoming interest in live performances, rising demand for authentic and unique experiences, and the development of digital technology in the entertainment industry all contribute to this growth. The human drive to create and experience original art is unstoppable and cannot be replaced by machines.
