Where the Most People Work from Home Due to the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic changed everything, and working from home proved to be something that many workers preferred! From the team at Financial Force comes this study that analyzes what areas across the United States saw the most people working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study included data from the 2016-2020 American Community Survey, which is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau on an annual basis.

In terms of metropolitan areas across the country, Colorado saw more workers transition to performing their jobs from home than any other state. Of the six metropolitan areas where the most were working form home, 50% of them were in Colorado with Boulder (16.1%), Fort Collins (11.7%) and Denver-Aurora-Lakewood (11.4%). According to the data, these were the 20 metropolitan areas in 2020 where the most people were working from home.

  4. Raleigh-Cary, NC: 12.1%
  5. Fort Collins, CO: 11.7%

  7. The Villages, FL: 11.4%
  8. Ithaca, NY: 11.2%
  9. Lawton, OK: 11.2%
  10. San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley, CA: 11.0%
  11. Santa Cruz-Watsonville, CA: 11.0%
  12. Charlottesville, VA: 10.7%
  13. Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA: 10.4%
  14. Punta Gorda, FL: 10.3%
  15. Washington-Arlington-Alexandra, DC-VA-MD-WV: 10.4%
  16. Durham-Chapel Hill, NC: 10.2%
  17. Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA: 10.1%
  18. Provo-Orem, UT: 10.1%
  19. Sante Fe, NM: 10.1%
  20. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Alpharetta, GA: 10.0%

We saw quite a bit of change in how work is performed when analyzing the transition from 2019 to 2020. According to this research from Financial Force, it was determined that three metropolitan areas across the United States saw a jump of more than 4% in terms of people who worked from home. These metropolitan areas included San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA (4.6% change from 2019 to 2020), San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley, CA (4.4% change from 2019 to 2020) and Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV (4.3% change from 2019 to 2020).
